Scholarship recommendations need to do two things: argue for the merit, AND argue for the specific impact funding will have. We do both.

I'm writing in strong support of Maria Santiago's application for the Hendricks Scholarship.
Maria is the top student in our graduating class. She is also, to my knowledge, working three jobs to fund her current studies — a fact she has not made public, but which I am aware of as her advisor.
The Hendricks Scholarship would not just reward her achievement. It would, very directly, let her stop working night shifts at the bookstore and devote those hours to research. That research is going to be excellent. We would be funding a very specific, very tangible outcome.
I recommend her without reservation, on both merit and need.
